Not to start. Hundreds of degree programs are taught fully in English, and our Chinese Language + Foundation Program is designed for complete beginners. For Chinese-taught degrees you will normally need HSK 4 or above, which is exactly what the language year prepares you for.

CSCA (China Scholastic Competency Assessment) is a standardized academic assessment designed for international students planning to pursue undergraduate study in China. CSCA results may be used by Chinese universities in undergraduate admission and scholarship assessment.

The exact requirement is not identical for every applicant. It can depend on the university, programme and application route. Subjects can include Mathematics, Professional Chinese, Physics and Chemistry.

Many students do, particularly at master’s and PhD level where the Chinese Government Scholarship covers tuition, accommodation, insurance and a monthly stipend. Full funding at undergraduate level is more competitive, so we usually combine a university tuition waiver with a provincial award. We will tell you honestly what your profile can realistically win.

Plan for your first semester fees, your flight, the visa fee, insurance and roughly three months of living costs. For most cities outside Beijing and Shanghai that means around 1,500 to 3,500 RMB a month for food, transport and phone.

Degrees from universities approved by China’s Ministry of Education are recognised internationally, and China has mutual recognition agreements with many countries. For medicine, check that the university is on the Ministry’s approved MBBS list and that your national medical council accepts it — ask us and we will confirm before you apply.

Part-time work and internships are possible but require permission from both your university and the local entry-exit authority. Never work without that approval; it puts your residence permit at risk.

You still have options. Provincial scholarships, university waivers and less-crowded majors at good regional universities take students whose grades would not win a CSC place. Strong motivation letters and a supervisor contact make a real difference.

From first enquiry to boarding the plane is typically three to six months, depending on the intake and how fast your documents are ready. Start at least four months before the intake you want.
